Initial Consultation; Hair & Scalp Diagnostics
Your hair regrowth journey at Elscott Medical begins with a doctor-led patient consultation and trichoscopic examination
Our Diagnostic Philosophy
Genetic hair loss, scalp conditions, and follicular miniaturisation present differently in every individual. Our comprehensive 5-step patient consultation establishes the health of your hair follicles, uncovers underlying causes of thinning and informs the tailored, evidence-based hair regrowth plan our doctors will design for you.
An initial consultation costs £150 and is conducted directly by Dr Adrian Scott or Dr Hala Elgmati.
Depending on the treatment sought, our Hair Transplant Doctors may (ahead of your initial consultation) invite you to access our 3D scanning portal and take photos of your scalp to submit to us for analysis before we see you in person or remotely via video consultation.
Pre-Consultation, Remote 3D Scan and Upload
- We may suggest a pre-assessment of your hair loss before you travel to our Glasgow clinic for a full consultation (or before a video consultation)
- Using our 3D portal (we’ll send you a link), you’ll take and upload photos of your head. Sometimes it’s good to ask a friend to help with the photos
- In advance of your consultation, we can start analysis of your hair loss condition and even render 3D images to show areas we can transplant

Our 5-Step Consultation Process
Step 1: Optional remote 3D Scan
Hair Transplant candidate uses our 3D portal at home to take and upload photos of their scalp.
Step 2: Clinical History & Goal Mapping
In-depth discussion of hair loss pattern, lifestyle, genetics, and expectations.
Step 3: Advanced Trichoscopic Scalp Analysis
High-resolution digital microscopy to analyse density, miniaturisation, and scalp health.
Step 4: Targeted Laboratory & Biomarker Testing
Diagnostic lab testing to rule out nutritional, hormonal, or metabolic underlying factors.
Step 5: Bespoke Treatment & Longevity Roadmap
Transparent discussion of full-spectrum options (Surgical, Biostimulants, or Prescriptions).
More Detail About The Process
Step 1: Pre-Consultation, Remote 3D Scan and Upload (Hair Transplant candidates only)
To help us pre-assess the extent of your hair loss in advance of your 1:1 consultation, we might invite you to submit photos of your scalp via our 3D portal.
- Follow the simple instructions on our 3D portal to take and securely upload photos of your scalp
- We receive your photos and our 3D imaging software allows us to both analyse more closely your hair loss condition and to also render 3D imaging showing areas we can transplant
- Ideal for patients who are unable to travel to our Glasgow clinic for the initial consultation and prefer a remote video 1:1
Step 2: In-Depth Clinical History & Consultation
We listen to your concerns, understand your personal goals, and review your medical background. We evaluate:
- The timeline and progression pattern of your hair loss.
- Family genetic history and lifestyle factors.
Previous hair loss treatments, medications, or surgical interventions. - Your personal aesthetic goals and long-term expectations.
Step 3: Trichoscopic Scalp Analysis
Dr Scott or Dr Elgmati conduct a microscopic examination using a trichoscope which magnifies your hair shafts and scalp surface up to x100, allowing us to look beyond the naked eye and evaluate follicle viability at a cellular level.
Key metrics evaluated include:
- Miniaturisation Ratios: Identifying the percentage of miniaturised hair follicles due to androgenic sensitivity
- Follicular Unit Density: We measure hair count per square centimetre in both the recipient (thinning) and donor zones
- Scalp & Dermal Health: Assesses microvascular circulation, perifollicular inflammation, seborrheic conditions, or scalp scarring
- Donor Reserve Health: Evaluate your donor area(s) and capacity to ensure long-term viability for micro-FUE or cellular banking
Step 4: Laboratory & Biomarker Testing
We will arrange clinical laboratory tests to evaluate:
- Hormonal Profiles: Assessing androgen levels, thyroid function and metabolic markers
- Nutritional & Micronutrient Panels: Checking Serum Ferritin (iron storage), Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and essential trace minerals critical for hair growth cycles
- Autoimmune & Inflammatory Markers: Identifying systemic conditions that can trigger inflammatory alopecia
By combining laboratory diagnostics with microscopic analysis, we eliminate guesswork and ensure your treatment targets the root cause of hair thinning.
Step 5: Your Bespoke Hair Longevity Roadmap
Armed with your trichoscopic assessment and lab results, your doctor creates a custom hair regrowth plan or roadmap.
Because Elscott Medical offers the full spectrum of hair restoration—from regenerative biostimulants and cellular preservation to microsurgical FUE and targeted trichological prescriptions—your plan is unconstrained by single-treatment limitations and will likely take the form of combination treatments optimal for sustained regrowth.
Your roadmap will outline:
- Clinical Eligibility: Transparent advice on whether you are a suitable candidate for surgery, biostimulants, prescription therapy, or hair banking
- Treatment Schedule: A timeline showing immediate procedures and treatments with long-term preventative care
- Realistic Expectations: Clear projections of what can be achieved, ensuring complete transparency before committing to treatment
- Indicative costs to proceed
