Medications for Hair Loss

Doctor-prescribed medications or emollients to promote long-term hair and scalp health

Trichology medications are often a vital component in tackling progressive hair thinning or assisting post-transplant follicle re-growth. Our Hair Transplant doctors can prescribe custom-blended, high-efficacy hair loss medications (or emollients) tailored to your hair loss profile.

What is Medical Hair Loss Therapy?

While procedures like an FUE hair transplant are excellent for permanently restoring areas like a receding hairline or thinning crown, they do not stop the biological progression of native hair thinning.

Prescription meds work at a cellular level to block harmful hormones like Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), increase microcirculation to the follicles, and prolong the active growth (anagen) phase of your hair. Ways in which they work:

  • Targeted Hormone Regulation: Clinically proven to block the primary triggers of genetic hair thinning.
  • Enhanced Follicular Nutrition: Promotes optimal blood flow to revive miniaturising hair follicles.
  • Synergistic Protection: Assists hair growth after FUE transplant surgery

Are Hair Growth Medications Right for You?

Prescription hair loss meds are suitable for men and women experiencing early to advanced stages of androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness) or diffuse thinning. They can stabilise hair loss without surgery, or work as part of a combination-therapy plan to optimise scalp health before or after an FUE procedure. During your private consultation in Glasgow, we will analyse your hair loss stage using the Norwood Scale (for men) or Ludwig Scale (for women) to determine the exact medication your scalp requires.

You’ve probably heard of the two most commonly-known meds for hair loss – Finasteride (prescription oral tablet) and Minoxidil (over-the-counter shampoo). They work best for male and female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), and generally take 3 to 6 months to show results. We prescribe both and other specialist hair growth meds.

How We Approach Medical Hair Loss Therapy at Elscott Medical

We do not treat hair loss as an isolated cosmetic issue. True hair longevity requires a comprehensive, medical-grade understanding of your entire scalp ecology. Before writing any prescription, our doctors conduct an exhaustive trichological evaluation to determine the root cause of your hair loss, your genetic prognosis, and your overall systemic health.

Many of our patients see the most dramatic, long-lasting results by combining customised pharmaceutical therapies with in-clinic stimulatory treatments like Regenerative Injections or Exosome Therapy. We assess every patient holistically—medication is a powerful foundational pillar, but it works best when integrated into a personalised, long-term master plan.

Your treatment plan is fully individualised. Following your assessment at our West Regent Street clinic, our doctors prescribe optimised formulations which may include high-grade topical solutions, customised oral therapies, or specialised scalp emollients. Because these are medical-grade treatments, your progress is monitored closely by our surgical team to ensure maximum safety, comfort, and efficacy.

Timeline & Results

Initial stabilisation of hair shedding typically occurs within the first 3 to 6 months of continuous use. Visible improvements in hair calibre, density, and coverage generally manifest between months 6 and 12, as miniaturised follicles transition back into healthy growth cycles. Hair restoration is a long-term relationship, which is why we schedule structured reviews at regular intervals to monitor your hair longevity journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The high-efficacy hair loss treatments we utilise are medical-grade, prescription-only compounds. Unlike generic over-the-counter options, these formulations feature optimised percentages of active ingredients and specialised delivery vehicles designed to maximise scalp absorption while minimising systemic side effects. They can only be safely authorised following a comprehensive clinical evaluation by a qualified medical doctor or surgeon.

Yes. Hair loss medications work by actively counteracting the genetic and hormonal triggers (such as DHT) responsible for pattern baldness. As long as the medication is present in your system, your hair follicles are protected, nourished, and maintained. If you discontinue the treatment entirely, that protective shield is removed, and your native hair will gradually return to its natural, genetically predetermined pattern of thinning over the following few months.

Absolutely, but the medical formulations prescribed to women are often completely different from those prescribed to men. Female pattern hair loss is complex and can be influenced by varying hormonal shifts, iron deficiencies, or thyroid changes. Our surgeons conduct a comprehensive medical and trichoscopic screen to design bespoke topical or oral formulations that are highly effective and completely safe for women.

While the transplanted hair follicles themselves are harvested from “safe zones” genetically resistant to thinning and will grow for a lifetime, your surrounding, non-transplanted hair remains highly susceptible to natural hair loss progression. Using a tailored medication regimen alongside your transplant stabilises the surrounding area, prevents new bald patches from forming behind your new hairline, and ensures your overall result remains dense, uniform, and seamless for years to come.

An initial, comprehensive medical hair loss consultation with our consultant surgeons is £150. The ongoing cost of your custom-compounded medications depends entirely on the specific active ingredients, delivery methods (topical vs. oral), and concentrations required for your unique treatment plan. A full, transparent breakdown of your pharmacy options will be provided during your clinical assessment.
