HairClone Follicle Banking

What is Hair Cloning?

Freeze healthy hair follicles today in readiness for possible thinning hair in the future. And, when needed, your harvested follicles are defrosted so cell therapies can rebuild (clone) new miniaturising hair roots matching your DNA, for implanting.

Are you a suitable candidate?

Patients should present as follows to be eligible:

  • Early-to-Moderate Hair Thinning: Patients in the early stages of hair loss (men experiencing early recession or women with diffuse thinning) who still possess healthy donor hair at the back of the head.
  • Seeking a Proactive Hair Loss Strategy: Individuals seeking an alternative or complement to lifelong daily medications or invasive surgeries, ensuring a preserved supply of their own cellular material.
  • Either Men or Women: Because cell therapy rejuvenates existing miniaturising hairs rather than relying on donor supply boundaries, it is exceptionally well-suited for female diffuse thinning where traditional transplants are often unviable.

Elscott Medical Approach

As an official partner clinic with HairClone, Elscott Medical applies this advanced technology to harvest vibrant, androgen-insensitive follicles that contain a high density of Dermal Papilla (DP) cells. Early banking ensures cells are preserved at their highest biological potency.

For your initial consultation at our Glasgow clinic, our Hair Transplant Doctor will evaluate your donor area under high-power trichoscopy to confirm your suitability clinical follicle banking.

Using HairClone technology, we extract a small sample of your naturally DHT-resistant donor follicles—which retain their DP cells—so they can be safely cryopreserved. When expanded cell therapies become clinically available, these banked cells will be multiplied a thousand-fold in a licensed GMP facility and we, or a future hair transplant clinic of your choosing, will implant into thinning scalp areas to restore thick, healthy hair growth.

The procedure

Follicle harvesting for cryo-banking is a swift, comfortable micro-procedure conducted under gentle local anaesthetic at our Glasgow clinic. After identifying a discrete donor site at the back of your head, our Hair Transplant Doctor extracts approximately 100 healthy hair follicles using ultra-fine micro-FUE tools. Because only a tiny sample of grafts is taken, your donor area remains visually unchanged.

Immediately following extraction, your harvested follicles are placed into specialised temperature-controlled containers and dispatched to Tissue & Cell Technologies UK, the world’s first dedicated hair follicle bank. There, your tissue is frozen in liquid nitrogen. Once clinical cell-expansion therapies are cleared for deployment, your frozen follicles will be thawed and processed to multiply your DP cells by x1,000 times whereupon the healthy DP-identical follicle cells are micro-injected into thinning parts of your scalp to rejuvenates hundreds of existing, miniaturising hair follicles so they produce thick hair again.

Recovery and results

Because we extract only around 100 microscopic grafts, recovery is rapid. The micro-extraction points close and heal within 48 to 72 hours without leaving linear scars or noticeable donor thinning. Most patients return to normal daily routines the following day, keeping the small donor area clean according to our simple aftercare instructions.

While follicle banking is an immediate service, the cell-multiplication injections represent an upcoming therapeutic pipeline which, once fully deployed, sees autologous DP cells injected into your scalp to reprogram and ‘reboot’ miniaturised, weak hairs. The expected outcome, will be thick, terminal hairs with long-lasting results and no requirement for daily maintenance or risk of cellular rejection.

Anyone wanting to 'freeze' their hair's biological age

“Hair loss is fundamentally caused by a loss of Dermal Papilla cells within the hair root. By partnering with HairClone to bank a patient’s healthiest follicles today, we can preserve the exact cellular building blocks needed to rebuild miniaturising hair from the inside out for years to come.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Dermal Papilla (DP) cells reside at the base of every hair follicle and control hair thickness and growth. As genetic hair loss progresses, follicles lose DP cells, causing the hair to shrink or “miniaturise”. Follicles at the back of the head are genetically resistant to DHT and retain their DP cells. Banking your follicles early preserves these robust cells at their youngest, most potent age, ensuring optimal biological material for future cell multiplication.

Currently, you are undergoing the follicle banking phase. Your extracted hair follicles are cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen to protect your cell line. Cell multiplication and reinjection therapies are actively being developed by HairClone and its research partners. Banking your tissue today ensures your personalised cell line is ready for expansion as soon as these clinical rejuvenation treatments become fully available.

A traditional hair transplant physically moves an intact hair follicle from one place to another in a “one-for-one” swap, which is limited by your available donor supply. HairClone’s approach extracts DP cells from a small batch (~100) of donor hairs, multiplies those cells 1,000-fold in a specialised laboratory, and injects them back into the scalp. Instead of creating new follicles from scratch, this rejuvenates hundreds of existing, miniaturising hair follicles so they produce thick hair again.

Yes, exceptionally so. Traditional hair transplants are often unsuitable for women because female hair loss tends to be diffuse across the entire scalp, making it difficult to identify clear donor and recipient zones. Because HairClone cell therapy rejuvenates existing miniaturising hairs rather than moving full follicles, it offers a non-surgical, autologous solution that can treat diffuse thinning across the whole scalp for both men and women.

Hair cloning prices start at £2,300 when done as part of an FUE hair transplant procedure, or £2,900 if follicle extraction and banking is done as a stand-alone Hair Cloning procedure.

There is also an annual maintenance fee of around £150, payable to our partners HairClone Banking who cryogenically store your follicles for future use.
