Body Hair Transplant

What is a body hair (BHT) transplant?

In a traditional hair transplant, the “safe donor zone” at the back and sides of the scalp provides the necessary grafts. However, some patients have depleted scalp donor areas due to advanced male pattern baldness or scarring from poorly executed past surgeries.

Body hair serves as an invaluable “Plan B,” expanding the available donor pool by hundreds of potential grafts when scalp hair is no longer an option.

Are you a suitable candidate?

Body Hair Transplantation (BHT) can work for individuals with advanced hair loss and who have insufficient scalp density of healthy ‘donor’ follicles. Suitable candidates must possess robust, high-density hair follicles on body donor areas such as the chest or beard, along with realistic expectations regarding the unique texture and growth cycles of body hair.

Elscott Medical Approach

Body Hair Transplantation (BHT) is an advanced micro-surgical technique used when scalp donor hair is severely depleted due to advanced pattern baldness or previous over-harvested procedures. At Elscott Medical, we utilise body hair—typically harvested from the beard, chest, or torso—as a valuable secondary donor source. Before recommending BHT, our doctors conduct a thorough trichological evaluation to assess the density, curl pattern, and growth cycle of your available body hair to ensure it will blend naturally with your existing scalp hair.

Every body hair procedure is performed entirely by our hair restoration doctors. Because body hair follicles reside at shallower depths and grow in different cycle lengths compared to scalp hair, our surgeons use specialised micro-FUE tools to harvest each graft cleanly without damaging the surrounding skin. We strategically place body hair into the crown or mid-scalp areas to build underlying bulk and density, while reserving prime scalp hair for the critical frontal hairline, creating a natural, balanced result.

The procedure

On the day of your treatment at our Glasgow clinic, your doctor precisely maps the targeted donor zones on your chest, beard, or body. Under local anaesthetic, individual follicular units are carefully extracted using ultra-fine FUE instruments specifically calibrated for body skin elasticity. The harvested grafts are immediately sorted, chilled, and preserved in nutrient solution.

Using precision implanter devices, your surgeon directly implants each body hair graft using implanters (the DHI technique). Controlling the direction, angle, and depth of each placement is vital, as body hair naturally has a slightly different texture and curl. The procedure typically takes between four to eight hours depending on the graft count required, during which you remain comfortable and awake in our private suite.

Recovery and results

Recovery is across both the body donor sites and the scalp recipient area. The extraction points on the chest or beard heal into virtually invisible pinpoint dots within 5 to 7 days. Mild redness and tiny crusts on the scalp settle within the first week. You will receive comprehensive aftercare instructions and direct surgical support to ensure both donor and recipient areas heal cleanly and comfortably.

Transplanted body hair typically sheds within two to four weeks post-procedure as part of the natural hair cycle. New, permanent growth begins to emerge around month three or four. Because body hair has a slightly shorter maximum growth phase, it provides excellent structural volume and density when mixed into thinning scalp hair. Final visual coverage matures between 12 to 15 months, leaving you with a noticeably fuller, restored look.

Patients with depleted scalp donor areas

“When scalp donor hair is severely limited, Body Hair Transplantation offers a powerful second chance at restoration. By strategically harvesting grafts from the beard or chest and blending them into the crown and mid-scalp, we can create substantial underlying density and volume that would otherwise be impossible to achieve.”

Frequently Asked Questions

No, body hair retains its original genetic characteristics, including its natural growth cycle and maximum length. While hair on your scalp stays in the active growth phase for years, body hair has a significantly shorter growth phase, meaning it typically grows to around 3 to 6 centimeters. Because of this, we strategically blend body hair grafts into the mid-scalp and crown to build dense, underlying volume, while reserving longer-growing scalp hair for the frontal hairline.

The beard area is universally considered the single best body hair donor source. Beard hair follicles are thick, robust, have a high survival rate similar to scalp hair, and grow relatively fast. The chest and torso serve as a secondary donor area if beard density is limited or unavailable. During your clinical consultation, our surgeons will evaluate the thickness, curl, and growth cycle of all potential donor sites to determine the optimal source for your scalp requirements.

Not when performed with micro-surgical precision. Our surgeons do not place body hair in solid blocks or along the delicate front hairline. Instead, body hair grafts are meticulously intermingled follicle-by-follicle among your existing scalp hair across the crown and mid-scalp. By matching the precise angle and exit direction of the surrounding hair, the coarser or slightly wavier texture of body hair seamlessly integrates, creating an illusion of natural, dense fullness.

Because we harvest individual follicles using refined Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) micro-punch tools, the procedure leaves barely visible scarring. The points of extraction heal into marks that fade into pale dots over time. When harvested correctly by an experienced surgeon across a broad donor area—such as under the chin or across the chest—these pinpoint marks become virtually invisible to the naked eye once healed.

Prices very depending on the specifics of each case but, in general, Body Hair Transplant costs between £3000 and £5000.
