Afro-Textured Hair Transplant

What is an Afro-Textured Hair Transplant?

This specialised hair restoration procedure is for patients with tight-curl, kinky, or coiled hair patterns. Unlike straight or wavy hair, Afro-textured hair possesses a distinct anatomical structure where the hair follicle curves beneath the surface of the scalp in a unique C-shaped or helical pattern.

Because of this hidden subsurface curve, performing a successful transplant requires specialised FUE tools and bespoke surgical techniques to harvest each graft safely without damaging the root. Once transplanted, the natural curl of Afro-textured hair provides exceptional coverage and volume, allowing for dense, completely natural restoration across the hairline, temples, or crown.

Are you a suitable candidate?

You may be an ideal candidate if you are experiencing genetic hair loss, receding temples, diffuse crown thinning, or traction alopecia from tight hairstyles. Essential requirements for a successful procedure include:

  • Sufficient Donor Density: Adequate healthy, dense hair available at the back or sides of the head to harvest without visibly thinning the donor area.
  • Stable Hair Loss: Hair loss that has been evaluated and stabilised, ensuring long-term aesthetic harmony as surrounding native hair ages.
  • Realistic Expectations: A clear understanding of what can be achieved based on your unique curl tightness and donor capacity.

Elscott Medical Approach

We do not treat Afro-textured hair using standard straight-hair protocols. Before designing your procedure, our hair restoration doctors conduct a detailed trichoscopic evaluation to assess your curl tight-pattern, scalp condition, and donor density to ensure safe extraction and natural alignment.

Because the follicle is enveloped in thicker dermal tissue, extracting these grafts without damage requires specialised, curved FUE tools and an exceptionally gentle technique. We carefully respect the natural growth angle and distinct hairline patterns—such as sharp, linear temple restoration or soft, natural edging—to deliver dense, seamless results that preserve your natural hair character.

The procedure

Under local anaesthetic, individual follicular units are harvested from the donor area at the back or sides of the head. Using specialised FUE instruments tailored for Afro-textured follicles, our surgeon navigates the curved root beneath the skin surface to extract complete, undamaged grafts.

Using ultra-fine implanter tools, our surgeon hand-implants each graft into the recipient area. The procedure typically takes between four to eight hours depending on the graft count required, during which you remain comfortable and awake in our private clinic suite.

Recovery and results

Initial healing is swift, with most patients returning to light daily activities within 5 to 7 days. Fine crusts form around the newly implanted coiled follicle, which naturally flake off within the first week as the scalp settles. Because Afro-textured skin can be more prone to temporary post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or keloid formation, you will receive a tailored post-procedure care protocol and direct surgical guidance to support clean, comfortable healing.

The transplanted hair naturally sheds within two to four weeks post-procedure as part of the normal biological growth cycle. Brand-new, permanent growth begins to emerge around month three or four, steadily gaining thickness and curl definition over time. Because Afro-textured hair naturally provides exceptional visual volume due to its curl pattern, full, mature coverage is often achieved by 12 to 14 months, leaving you with dense, natural hair you can style with confidence.

“Restoring Afro-textured hair is one of the most rewarding challenges in hair surgery. Because the follicle curves beneath the scalp, extraction requires specialised tools and absolute technical delicacy. However, that same natural curl provides extraordinary visual volume, delivering incredible, dense coverage once restored.”

Frequently Asked Questions

The main difference lies beneath the skin surface. While straight hair follicles descend vertically into the scalp, Afro-textured follicles curve in a C-shaped or spiral pattern. This requires specialised FUE tools and bespoke extraction techniques to harvest each graft without damaging the delicate root. Additionally, hairline design for Afro-textured hair often focuses on distinct, structured angles—such as sharp, clean temple lines—to complement natural styling preferences.

Yes, in fact, Afro-textured hair often achieves exceptional visual density with fewer total grafts compared to straight hair. Because each hair shaft possesses a tight curl and structural volume, the emerging hair covers a larger surface area of the scalp. When placed at natural angles by an experienced surgeon, coily hair types create an exceptionally full, natural-looking result.

Afro-textured skin types can be more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, temporary bumps, or keloid formation. At Elscott Medical, we mitigate these risks by using ultra-fine micro-punches, keeping depth placement precise, and providing specialised post-procedure topical protocols. During your initial consultation, we thoroughly assess your scalp’s healing response to ensure the procedure is safe and entirely suitable for your skin.

Prices very depending on the specifics of each case but, in general, Afro-textured hair transplant costs between £3,000 and £7,000.
